The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) is mourning the sudden and tragic loss of its personnel following a horrific road crash inside Murchison Falls National Park on Sunday night, which claimed the lives of three employees and left four others critically injured.
Among the deceased has been identified as Robert Wamala Lumanyika, the tax body’s former Acting Manager for Public and Corporate Affairs.
The fatal accident occurred at approximately 8:00 PM on Sunday, May 24, 2026, along the Arua-Kampala highway within the national park boundaries in Nwoya District.
According to Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura, a silver Toyota Hiace (registration number UA 20121AA) carrying seven URA officials was returning to Kampala from official field duties in Arua City when it violently rammed into an elephant that was crossing the road.

The impact of the collision caused the driver to completely lose control of the vehicle, which was extensively damaged. Lumanyika and two other URA staff members died on the spot. Four other occupants, including the driver, sustained severe injuries and were pulled from the wreckage by emergency responders.
The injured survivors were initially rushed to Kiryandongo Hospital for emergency stabilization before being transferred to Kampala on Monday morning for specialized medical management.
The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Anaka Hospital mortuary pending postmortem examinations and repatriation to their respective families.
The tragedy has reignited intense public debate and concerns regarding the safety of motorists traveling through wildlife-protected conservation corridors, particularly along the Karuma and Murchison Falls stretches where low visibility at night frequently leads to dangerous animal encounters.
Police and the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) have once again issued a stern warning to night travelers to strictly adhere to set speed limits and exercise extreme caution when driving through national parks.
