Senior Presidential Advisor Moses Karangwa Dies in Kayunga Car Crash

Seasoned politician and Senior Presidential Advisor Moses Karangwa Kalisa has tragically passed away after sustaining severe injuries in a motor vehicle crash in Kayunga District on Sunday, May 17, 2026.

His untimely passing was formally confirmed by the Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babalanda, through an official statement released on various media platforms.

Babalanda expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Karangwa as a tragic casualty of a road accident and a fiercely loyal, valued member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party. On behalf of the government, she extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family during this incredibly difficult time.

Karangwa was a powerhouse in regional politics, heavily recognized for his influential mobilization work within the NRM. In January 2026, President Yoweri Museveni appointed him as his Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Duties.

The high-profile deployment followed an internal party race where Karangwa narrowly lost the contest for the NRM Buganda Region chairmanship to former minister Godfrey Kiwanda Ssuubi.

At the time of his death, Karangwa was actively serving as the NRM District Chairperson for Kayunga, a position he used to solidify the ruling party’s presence in a historically highly contested political sub-region.

Prior to his leadership in Kayunga, he had served in a similar capacity as the NRM chairperson for Jinja Municipality, demonstrating a long career of grassroots mobilization spanning across different regions of eastern and central Uganda.

The news of his sudden death has sent shockwaves through the political establishment, with several party leaders, Ministers, and Members of Parliament taking to social media to eulogize him as a dedicated patriot and an uncompromising pillar of the NRM.

Burial arrangements and further details regarding the cause of the fatal crash are expected to be communicated by the family and the Ministry for the Presidency in due course.
