Six Killed in Gomba Road Crash Today: Speeding Taxi Overturns

A joyous journey to a wedding ceremony turned into a scene of devastation early this morning when a speeding taxi overturned in Gomba District, claiming the lives of six people.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 am at Lumonya along the Maddu–Ssembabule Road, shattering the peace of the early Saturday hours as first responders rushed to the wreckage.

The ill-fated vehicle, a Toyota Hiace taxi with registration number UA 788DJ, was transporting passengers from Ssembabule to Nakasongola for a wedding celebration.

Preliminary reports from traffic authorities suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed, causing the taxi to overturn several times before coming to a halt. The violence of the crash was such that four individuals died instantly at the scene.

Two more victims succumbed to their injuries shortly after being rushed to a nearby medical facility, bringing the total death toll to six. Three other survivors are currently receiving medical attention for injuries sustained during the rollover. The wreckage of the taxi, intended to carry a party of celebrants, now serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of speeding on the country’s highways.

Security and traffic authorities have used this tragedy to reiterate the critical importance of road safety. They have urged all motorists to strictly observe speed limits and exercise maximum caution, especially during early morning trips when visibility and road conditions can be unpredictable.

Speeding remains one of the leading causes of fatal road crashes across Uganda, frequently turning festive occasions into periods of national mourning.

Investigations into the exact circumstances of the Lumonya crash are ongoing as police work to identify all the victims and notify their families in Ssembabule and Nakasongola.

For now, a community that was prepared to celebrate a union is instead grappling with a sudden and profound loss of life.
