The high-profile murder trial of Christopher Onyum Okello entered its final stages on Monday, April 27, 2026, as the defense team officially closed its case. The proceedings, held at the Ggaba mobile court, reached a turning point when the defense admitted it could not secure additional witnesses to support Okello’s testimony.
Evidentiary Gaps and Witness Untraceability
Defense counsel Richard Kumbuga informed the court that efforts to produce two final witnesses were unsuccessful. Despite a prior adjournment granted on Friday to allow the defense more time, the team was unable to bring forward further testimony.
Presiding Judge Alice Komuhangi Khaukha observed that the defense had provided the court with phone contacts for the missing witnesses but failed to provide physical addresses. This lack of residential information made it impossible for court officials to locate or summon the individuals. Consequently, the defense rested its case with only three witnesses having testified.
Background of the Allegations
Okello stands accused of multiple counts of murder following the April 2 incident at Ggaba Nursery and Daycare Centre. The prosecution alleges that Okello was responsible for the stabbing deaths of four toddlers: Gideon Eteku, Keisha Agenorwoth Otim, Ignitius Sseruyange, and Ryan Odeke.

During his defense, Okello denied intentional wrongdoing, attributing the tragic events to severe psychological distress and external threats. He challenged the validity of his previous confessions, claiming they were extracted under duress and physical pressure. The prosecution, however, maintains that the killings were a deliberate act, previously suggesting motives related to a desire for wealth.
With the defense case now closed, the trial moves into the final phase of legal submissions. The court has outlined the following procedural steps:
• Final Submissions: The defense has requested time to prepare its closing arguments.
• Assessors’ Opinion: Three court assessors are expected to deliver their advisory opinions, reflecting the perspective of ordinary citizens on the evidence presented.
• Verdict: Following the assessors’ input, Justice Khaukha will deliver the final judgment on a date yet to be specified.
The case continues to draw significant public interest due to the age of the victims and the gravity of the charges.
