Three Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash on Kampala–Entebbe Expressway After Driver Dozes Off

Three people lost their lives in a heartbreaking single-vehicle accident on the Mpala section of the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway this morning when the driver fell asleep from fatigue during a long trip from Masaka to Entebbe Airport.

Early this Monday morning, a routine drive turned into unimaginable tragedy on Uganda’s Kampala–Entebbe Expressway. In the Mpala stretch—between Kajjansi and the airport-bound lanes—a vehicle heading from Masaka toward Entebbe International Airport veered disastrously off course.

The cause? Pure exhaustion. Preliminary accounts from Kampala–Entebbe Expressway officials point to the driver dozing off after what was likely a grueling long-distance journey. The car lost control, leading to a fatal single-vehicle crash that claimed three lives instantly. A fourth occupant survived but with serious injuries and was quickly rushed to the nearest hospital for emergency care.

Expressway management swiftly mobilized their Incident Response team, coordinating with Uganda Police to lock down the scene, clear debris, and keep traffic flowing as safely as possible amid the chaos. In an official statement shared across their channels, they expressed profound sorrow: deepest condolences to the grieving families, and sincere wishes for the injured person’s full recovery.

Allan Ssempebwa, Communications Officer at the Ministry of Works and Transport, confirmed the incident via his updates: “A road crash reported this morning in the Mpala–Kajjansi area, one vehicle involved. Preliminary info shows fatalities and injuries; our teams, including KEE and Police, are on site handling it.”

This heartbreaking event has reignited urgent calls for road safety awareness. Officials are pleading with motorists—especially those tackling extended drives—to prioritize rest stops, avoid pushing through tiredness, and stick rigidly to speed limits. Fatigue, they stress, is as dangerous as any mechanical failure or reckless maneuver on these high-speed corridors.
