A security guard at GT Expert Security Group in Fort Portal City went on a shooting spree Friday evening, killing a police constable and sparking panic before being shot dead by joint police-UPDF forces.
Chaos gripped Fort Portal City on Friday evening when a security guard unleashed a deadly shooting spree at his workplace, killing a responding police officer and sending residents fleeing in terror.
The suspect, identified as Paul Mutazindwa, a guard employed by GT Expert Security Group’s Rwenzori regional offices along Kiboga Road, reportedly opened fire around 5:30 p.m., paralyzing nearby businesses, halting traffic, and forcing people to seek safety.
Rwenzori West Police Spokesperson Vincent Twesige confirmed that Police Constable Duncan Bainomugisha was fatally shot while among the first responders attempting to contain the situation at the company premises. Five other security personnel were safely rescued during the operation.

Duncan Bainomugisha was fatally shot dead.
The tense standoff lasted nearly six hours, ending around 10:30 p.m. when joint forces from the Uganda Police Force and Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) engaged Mutazindwa in a gunfire exchange. The guard refused to surrender and was fatally shot, bringing the incident to a close.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as deeply shocking, with some speculating that Mutazindwa had been demanding to speak with his superiors—possibly over unresolved workplace issues. Police have arrested two individuals to aid the ongoing probe.
“We are actively investigating the motive,” Twesige told journalists. “Fortunately, the company has CCTV cameras, and our experts are reviewing the footage to establish what triggered this unfortunate incident.”
The bodies of Constable Bainomugisha and the deceased guard were transported to Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations. Attempts to reach GT Expert Security representatives for comment were unsuccessful as of press time.
Authorities continue to urge calm as investigations deepen, with no further threats reported in the area.
