Bobi Wine’s Video Spot: Abandoned IK Musaazi Centre Goes Viral in Kanyanya

It is now confirmed that the unfinished building where opposition leader Bobi Wine filmed one of his most talked-about videos since going into hiding is the long-abandoned IK Musaazi International Medical Research Centre in Kanyanya, Kawempe Division.

Since January 16, a day after the 2026 presidential election, National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) has stayed out of public sight. Heavy security has surrounded his Magere home, restricting movement for his family and close aides. Despite this, Bobi Wine has continued releasing video messages from various undisclosed locations, reassuring supporters and occasionally taunting authorities with claims that security forces cannot track him.

One of the most shared clips shows him standing on the rooftop of an incomplete high-rise, with Kampala’s skyline in the background. Social media users initially speculated wildly about the filming location. That mystery has now been solved: the building is the derelict IK Musaazi International Medical Research Centre in Kanyanya.

Since the revelation, the abandoned site has unexpectedly turned into a full-blown tourist attraction in Kanyanya. Crowds of curious visitors, including many popular Ugandan content creators and influencers, have been flocking to the site daily to capture photos and shoot viral videos from the same rooftop Bobi Wine used.

TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube are now flooded with clips filmed there, with creators posing dramatically against the unfinished structure and Kampala skyline in the background.

Business owners have also jumped on the trend, using the spot to advertise products—everything from clothing brands and energy drinks to beauty services—turning the derelict building into an impromptu marketing hotspot.

Some locals have even started charging small fees for rooftop access, turning what was once a forgotten landmark into one of the most talked-about and visited places in Kampala right now.

The building itself carries deep historical significance but has been left to decay for more than two decades. The multi-million-shilling facility was commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni in December 2000 to honour Ignatius Kangave Musaazi, a prominent 1950s freedom fighter who played a crucial role in Uganda’s independence struggle and the broader African emancipation movement.

Musaazi donated the 22-acre land to the government before his death in 1990, with the intention of creating a centre to accommodate international medical researchers and Ugandan doctors.

During the foundation-laying ceremony, Museveni criticised former President Milton Obote for imprisoning Musaazi and failing to recognise his contributions as a nationalist leader.

Ironically, the same site—once meant to symbolise progress and honour—has now gained new life as the backdrop for one of Bobi Wine’s most symbolic appearances since he went underground.

What was once a stalled dream project has become a talking point, a photo spot, and a reminder of unfinished promises in Uganda’s political and developmental landscape.
