Kampala, Uganda – Ethnic Prides Organization has earned a prominent spot among nominees for the 2025 Ekkula Sustainable Tourism Awards. The non-profit, deeply rooted in safeguarding the country’s rich ethnic tapestry, landed the nod in the Cultural and Community Category. This honor spotlights their transformative work in blending tradition with modern outreach, positioning cultural preservation as a cornerstone of sustainable development.
The recognition centers on the organization’s flagship initiative, Cultural Prides, Voices of Heritage. As Uganda’s first program of its kind, it masterfully combines heritage, learning, and entertainment into an engaging edutainment format. By doing so, it actively involves local communities, uplifts young voices, and showcases tourism opportunities that honor authenticity over commercialization.
In recent months, Voices of Heritage has left an indelible mark on diverse Ugandan regions. The program delves into cultural identity, intricate clan structures, age-old arts, and ancestral wisdom. It employs music, spoken-word performances, and digital narratives to spark renewed interest in these elements. Participants and audiences alike find themselves drawn back to their origins, fostering a sense of pride that extends beyond borders.
This approach has successfully captured the attention of both domestic travelers and international visitors. Tourists now seek out experiences that offer genuine insights into Uganda’s 56 ethnic groups, from Buganda’s royal drumming to the Karamojong’s beadwork traditions. The initiative’s events have turned quiet villages into vibrant cultural hubs, boosting local economies while ensuring traditions evolve without fading.
Zedmonk Ssabatontomi, the founder and executive director, views the nomination as a significant achievement. He emphasizes that it validates their strategy of blending creativity with cultural stewardship. Uganda’s heritage, he notes, serves as a powerful engine for social cohesion and financial growth, with Voices of Heritage demonstrating how traditions can adapt and thrive in contemporary settings.
