Security forces in Soroti District are making significant progress following the brutal killing of a mobile money agent last Friday. Four suspects are now behind bars in connection with the aggravated robbery and fatal shooting that occurred in the heart of Soroti City.
The incident, which took place in the early hours of Friday, April 3, 2026, resulted in the death of Patricia Kokunda. She was attacked and robbed at the Teso Coach Park along Station Road, a busy area near Goalman Supermarket.
The police response has been swift. Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirms that the first two suspects, Alex Okello and Felix Onego, were apprehended on the same day as the attack.
Following intense interrogation and intelligence-led operations, a third suspect, Simon Epeu (also known as Iboda), was tracked down to Anyara in Kalaki District. During his arrest, authorities recovered Shs 7,000,000, which is believed to be part of the stolen funds.
The biggest breakthrough came this Saturday, April 6, when police arrested the man suspected of pulling the trigger. Alfred Elacu was apprehended in Orungo, Amuria District. Additionally, the victim’s smartphone has been recovered after it was found discarded in a bush in Kichinjani.
Safety Concerns for Mobile Money Operators
This incident highlights the persistent risks faced by mobile money agents, especially those operating during late-night or early-morning hours. The Teso Coach Park is a major transit hub, and the timing of the attack (around 04:40 am) suggests that the assailants may have been monitoring the victim’s movements.
Local business owners are now calling for increased police patrols in the Station Road area and better lighting around transit parks to deter such violent crimes.
Investigations Continue
While the primary suspects are in custody, police state that the file remains open. Investigators are still working to recover additional exhibits and ensure a water-tight case for prosecution.
Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around business hubs. For the family of Patricia Kokunda, the arrests offer a glimmer of hope for justice in a tragedy that has shaken the Teso sub-region.
