Makerere Guild Race: Kadondi and Karema in Standoff Over Kikoni Rally Venue

The race for the 92nd Makerere University Guild Presidency is reaching a boiling point as the two frontrunners, Gracious Kadondi and Hannah Karema, both claim Nalika Lane in Makerere Kikoni for their final rallies this Tuesday, April 7.

With both camps refusing to budge, concerns are growing over a potential confrontation in a campaign season that is already marred by recent clashes.

The Battle for Nalika Lane

The standoff centers on a scheduling conflict that many fear is a recipe for disaster.

Gracious Kadondi (NUP): Affiliated with the National Unity Platform, Kadondi is branding her event as a “Street Jam.” She is bringing heavy hitters from the Fire Base Crew and the local music scene, including King Saha, Nubian Li, Dax Vibez, Kabako, and Nina Roz.

Hannah Karema (Independent): The former Miss Uganda is countering with an event themed “Retake yebinyanya nyanya.” Her lineup is equally star-studded, featuring DJ Suuna Ben, Sheebah Karungi, and B2C.

Both candidates insist they are the rightful occupants of the venue. Karema’s team claims they secured police clearance and booked the location weeks ago, accusing rivals of intentionally creating a “clash” to disrupt her momentum. Kadondi’s supporters, meanwhile, remain firm that their “Street Jam” is the primary attraction for the Kikoni student community.

Analysis: The Musical Arms Race in Campus Politics

At Santa Media Uganda, we are observing a significant shift in how university elections are contested. It is no longer just about the manifesto; it is a musical arms race. By hiring the country’s top A-list artists, both Kadondi and Karema are using “Star Power” to signal dominance and attract the massive crowds needed to swing the undecided vote.

However, this strategy carries risks. Following the March 27th suspension of the presidential debate due to violence between the two camps, the presence of rival fanbases and high-energy music at a single venue creates a volatile environment.

Police and Electoral Commission on High Alert

As of Monday afternoon, the Uganda Police Force has not issued a final directive on how to manage the two simultaneous events. The Guild Electoral Commission, represented by Maureen Owomugisha, is currently under pressure to resolve the venue dispute before the first speakers take the stage tomorrow.

Students and residents of Kikoni are advised to remain vigilant, as the heavy presence of security personnel is expected throughout the day to prevent a repeat of last month’s chaos.
