Ggaba Memorial Service: Community Mourns Slain Pupils Amid Security Calls

The Ggaba Community Church is filled with mourners today as the neighborhood gathers to pay a solemn tribute to four young pupils tragically killed in last Thursday’s attack at Ggaba Early Development Program.

The memorial service for Keisha Agenrwot, Ryan Odeke, Gideon Eteku, and Ignatius Sseruyange is a focal point for a community seeking healing and a nation demanding answers about the current state of school safety.

A Community in Mourning

The atmosphere across Ggaba remains heavy with grief. The Maranatha-program schools, overseen by the church, are bringing together families, local leaders, and citizens in a unified show of support. While the suspect, Christopher Onyum, remains in custody for the alleged stabbing, the pain within the daycare center’s walls is fresh and deeply felt.

Balam Barugahara is attending as the chief mourner, extending condolences while emphasizing that this moment must be used to strengthen child protection measures across Uganda immediately.

The Security Gap: A National Discussion

This tragedy is sparking a critical conversation about the safety of early development centers. For parents in Kampala, daycare facilities are expected to be safe havens, yet this breach of security is forcing a re-evaluation of current standards. Santa Media Uganda is closely monitoring the following developments:

• Access Control: There are growing questions regarding how unauthorized individuals can access facilities dedicated to young children.

• Emergency Readiness: Schools are now reviewing their internal protocols for handling physical threats on-site.

• Community Vigilance: Residents are calling for better identification of high-risk individuals in residential areas to prevent such incidents before they happen.

Ongoing Investigations

Divisional Police Commander of Kabalagala, Ayiko Sydney, is calling for calm as authorities continue their work. Police reassure the public that every effort is being made to establish the full circumstances of the attack. However, for the families involved, the demand for justice is immediate.

Community leaders at the service are making it clear: “Sorry” is not enough. This tragedy serves as a loud call for policy shifts regarding security at both private and faith-based educational centers.

Protecting Our Future

As Ggaba mourns, the names of these four children remain a reminder of why child protection must be the priority of every citizen. For Santa Media Uganda, this tragedy highlights that community safety is a collective responsibility. Beyond gates and locks, a holistic approach to safeguarding our children is now a mandatory requirement for our society.
