Uganda Fully Restores Internet Services After Two-Week Election Shutdown

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has officially announced the full restoration of internet services across the country, ending a two-week disruption that began on January 13, 2026, at 6:00 PM.

The shutdown was implemented as a “legitimate measure” to maintain public order in the lead-up to the January 15 general elections.

In a public notice issued on Monday, January 26, 2026, and shared via official channels, the UCC explained that services were reinstated following the successful completion of required technical evaluations and security reviews.

The announcement received backing from General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who described the decision as a welcome return to normalcy after a period of electoral tension. In a post on X, he expressed gratitude to Ugandans for their patience and cooperation throughout the election process.

“The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) informs the General Public that internet services have been fully restored across the country, following successful completion of the necessary technical and security assessments,” the UCC statement read.

Citizens can now access the internet and all online platforms without the previous limitations.

The UCC thanked the public for their understanding and patience during the restricted period, reaffirming its commitment to ongoing monitoring of the digital space to ensure a secure, stable, and reliable online environment for everyone.
