Biggie Events Released from Luzira After Partial Payment of UGX 70M Debt

Popular events promoter Mariam Mutakubwa, better known as Biggie Events, walked free from Luzira Prison yesterday after more than a week behind bars. The release came after high-profile musicians stepped in to help settle a UGX 70 million debt that had landed her in court.

Biggie had borrowed the money from businessman David Tumusiime Amooti to fund a major show. When the event failed to generate expected returns, she couldn’t meet repayment terms. Tumusiime took legal action, leading to her arrest and a six-month sentence.

News of her imprisonment quickly spread, prompting an outpouring of support. Singers Spice Diana and Ameria Nambala publicly pledged donations, while other industry players joined the fundraising push.

Negotiations with the lender followed, and a significant portion of the debt was cleared, securing her release. Speaking shortly after stepping out, Biggie thanked everyone who contributed. “I’m overwhelmed by the love from fellow promoters, artists, my family, and fans,” she said. “This was a tough lesson, but your support brought me home.”
