A horrific dawn collision on the Masaka-Mbarara highway has left eight people dead, including a serving police officer. The accident, which occurred near Lyantonde, involved a Gateway bus and a heavy-duty Mercedes-Benz truck, once again highlighting the extreme risks faced by travelers on Uganda’s western transit corridor.
The incident happened at approximately 4:00 AM when the truck, registration number UBL 482C, reportedly lost control and rammed into the oncoming bus, registration number UAM 913T. The impact was so severe that the cabin of the truck was completely detached, and the side of the bus was shredded, leading to instant fatalities.
A Loss Within the Force
Among those confirmed dead is a police officer who was a passenger on the bus at the time of the crash. While the identities of the other seven victims are still being finalized by forensic teams at Lyantonde Hospital, the loss of a law enforcement officer has added a layer of somberness to the recovery efforts.
First responders spent several hours using specialized cutting equipment to extricate survivors and victims from the mangled remains of the Gateway bus. Several passengers with critical injuries have been transferred to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for emergency surgery.
This latest tragedy brings into sharp focus the ongoing debate regarding the safety of long-distance night travel in Uganda. The section of the road near Lyantonde is known for its narrow shoulders and frequent heavy fog during early morning hours, which often reduces visibility for drivers of heavy-duty vehicles.
Traffic police at the scene have pointed to a potential mechanical failure of the truck as a preliminary cause, though a full forensic investigation is currently underway to determine if driver fatigue also played a role.
Local leaders in Lyantonde are using this moment to call for a review of highway infrastructure, specifically suggesting the installation of better reflective signage and expanded climbing lanes for slow-moving trucks. The frequency of head-on collisions involving buses and transit trucks suggests that current safety measures may be insufficient for the volume of traffic this highway handles.
As the wreckage is cleared and traffic begins to flow again, the community remains in shock over the scale of the loss. The police have urged all motorists traveling the Masaka-Mbarara route to exercise maximum caution, especially during the unpredictable weather conditions of the current season.
