Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine announces brief departure from the country after evading regime pursuit following disputed 2026 election.
Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine (Robert Kyagulanyi) has announced a temporary departure from Uganda after more than two months in hiding following the disputed January 2026 presidential election.
In a defiant message to supporters, Wine stated that he evaded a military raid on his home shortly after President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner, crediting the Ugandan people for sheltering and protecting him during an intense manhunt. The regime reportedly raided homes of allies, set up roadblocks, arrested campaign-linked police officers, and placed his properties under siege but failed to capture him.

Today, Wine revealed he has briefly left the country to conduct vital international engagements with allies and friends of Uganda. He emphasized that this move is strategic, aimed at advancing the struggle for freedom and democracy, and pledged to return soon to intensify the push against authoritarian rule.
The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions post-election, with Wine and his National Unity Platform (NUP) rejecting the results as rigged and fraudulent.
