Uganda Govt Denies Internet Shutdown Rumors Ahead of January 15, 2026 Elections

The Ugandan government has firmly dismissed circulating rumors of an internet blackout during the upcoming general elections, labeling them as deliberate misinformation aimed at stirring unnecessary panic.

At a media briefing on January 5, 2026, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Aminah Zawedde, reassured the public that no such directive exists.

“The government has not announced, nor directed, any internet shutdown during the elections,” Dr. Zawedde stated, emphasizing that these false claims are designed to create fear and division as political campaigns heat up ahead of polling on January 15, 2026.

She highlighted the vital role of digital platforms in fostering democratic engagement, urging responsible use amid rising misinformation on social and traditional media.

The ministry, in collaboration with the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), has conducted nationwide engagements with broadcasters and stakeholders to uphold ethical standards, professionalism, and accountability in election reporting.

Officials reiterated that responsible media practices are key to preserving peace, public order, and national stability during this critical period.
