EC Chair Byabakama Condemns Violent Attack on Bobi Wine in Gulu

Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, has strongly condemned the brutal attack on National Unity Platform presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) and his supporters by security operatives in Gulu City on Saturday.

In a statement released Monday, Justice Byabakama described the incident as “unfortunate and uncalled for,” especially coming just days after a high-level meeting between presidential candidates’ agents and the Uganda Police Force where all parties pledged peaceful campaigns.

He demanded an immediate police investigation into why armed personnel — both in uniform and plain clothes — used guns, batons, and sticks against Bobi Wine’s convoy, his supporters, and even Electoral Commission security escorts as they headed to a scheduled rally.

Byabakama reminded all stakeholders that every duly nominated presidential candidate has the constitutional right to campaign freely across Uganda provided they follow the law. He stressed that any disagreement must be resolved through dialogue, not violence.

The Commission further called on law enforcement to exercise maximum restraint and use only proportionate, lawful, and humane measures when enforcing electoral guidelines.

During the confrontation at the Bank of Uganda junction in Gulu, several NUP supporters were injured, including comedian Sir Dan Magic (Daniel Oyirwoth), who was left bleeding from the head.

Justice Byabakama urged swift accountability for those responsible, saying perpetrators must face the full force of the law.

The incident has heightened tensions ahead of the 2026 general elections and intensified public calls for peaceful political engagement.
