UAE Slaps Visa Ban on Uganda in 2026 Amid Shocking Dubai Trafficking Scandal

UAE bans Ugandan visas from 2026 after BBC exposes sex trafficking ring targeting Ugandan women in Dubai, hitting jobs and travel hard.

The United Arab Emirates has put Uganda on its 2026 visa ban list, blocking tourist and work visas for Ugandans. This move affects nine countries, like Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Cameroon, and Sudan. It’s from a new UAE immigration rule. Ugandans already in the UAE with valid visas can stay. The ban is temporary, but no end date is set yet.

The ban comes right after a BBC report exposed a sex trafficking ring in Dubai run by Ugandan Charles Mwesigwa. He lured young Ugandan women with fake job offers for hotels and shops. Once there, they faced debt, forced sex work, and gross demands from rich clients. Some women died in falls from high buildings, like Monic Karungi and Kayla Birungi. Their families say the deaths were not investigated right. The UAE sees this as a security risk, leading to the ban.

Uganda sends about 4,457 workers to the UAE each year, mostly women as housemaids, drivers, guards, and cleaners. They send home key cash for families and the country. Dubai is also big for Ugandan traders buying electronics, clothes, and jewelry to sell back home. It’s a top spot for Ugandan tourists too, for luxury trips. The ban could hurt jobs, trade, and travel, causing economic pain.

The news has sparked calls for better safety for Ugandan workers abroad. Diplomats and groups say Uganda needs stronger rules to stop unsafe trips. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not spoken yet, but talks with the UAE are expected. Families of the lost women see the ban as a warning of Gulf dangers.
