Socialite Don Chris Faces Uganda Job Scam Allegations, Will He Clear His Name?

In a dramatic turn of events, Asiimwe Christian, widely known as socialite Don Chris, has agreed to surrender to Ugandan authorities, but only on his own terms. The high-profile figure is at the center of a massive job scam scandal involving his travel company, Skypins Tour and Travels. With 350 Ugandans allegedly defrauded of over UGX 1.4 billion, the case has sparked public outrage and intense media scrutiny. Don Chris denies the allegations and claims there’s more to the story. What’s really going on? Let’s dive into the details of this unfolding saga.

The Allegations Against Don Chris

According to Mr. Mudenyi Simon, spokesperson for Uganda’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, Don Chris is accused of orchestrating a job scam that targeted desperate Ugandans seeking overseas employment. The scheme allegedly involved:

•  Promising lucrative jobs abroad: Victims were lured with offers of high-paying jobs through Skypins Tour and Travels.

•  Partial payment demands: Victims paid half the fees upfront, with promises to settle the balance after securing jobs.

•  Massive financial losses: Over 350 individuals reported losses totaling UGX 1.4 billion.

Mr. Mudenyi confirmed that Don Chris fled Uganda via the Malaba border on June 20th, prompting a nationwide manhunt. However, the Ministry has urged him to turn himself in to share his side of the story.

Don Chris Responds: “I’m Not the Owner of Skypins”

In a bold move, Don Chris addressed the allegations in a video shared with BBS TV. He expressed gratitude to Mr. Mudenyi for the opportunity to present his side but laid out strict conditions for his surrender:

•  No arrest upon arrival: Don Chris insisted he would only cooperate if guaranteed freedom from immediate arrest.

•  Official summons required: He stated he would respond only to a formal police summons, emphasizing his desire to act “within the law.”

•  Denial of ownership: Surprisingly, Don Chris denied owning Skypins Tour and Travels but offered to represent the company in negotiations.

“I’m ready to share my side of the story, but I won’t be arrested when I show up,” Don Chris declared. “I’m not the owner of Skypins, but I’m willing to stand in for them.”

A Dispute Over the Numbers

Adding fuel to the fire, Don Chris challenged the reported UGX 1.4 billion figure, alleging a conspiracy to inflate the amount. He claimed:

•  Initial claims were lower: Don Chris stated that earlier reports cited UGX 500–600 million, not the UGX 1.75 billion now alleged.

•  Accusations of fraud: He accused Hon. Balaam of inflating the figures to extort money from the President under the guise of victim compensation.

•  Political motives: Don Chris suggested the timing of the allegations aligns with the President’s campaign, hinting at a plot to exploit the situation.

“These people are trying to defraud the President while he’s busy campaigning,” Don Chris alleged. “The money involved is not UGX 1.4 billion, and I’m ready to prove it.”

What’s Next for Don Chris and the Victims?

As investigations continue, the public awaits answers. Will Don Chris follow through on his promise to surrender? Can he clear his name and prove his claims of a conspiracy? For the 350 victims, the stakes are high, with their financial losses and hopes for justice hanging in the balance. The Uganda Police have vowed to pursue the case rigorously, but Don Chris’s conditions could complicate matters.
