Hon. Balaam Denies Extortion Allegations in Don Chris Fraud Case Controversy

Uganda’s Hon. Balaam Barugahara refutes Don Chris’ extortion claims, addressing a 1.4 billion fraud case. Learn about his response, victim support, and the pursuit of justice.

Hon. Dr. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, Uganda’s State Minister for Gender, Labour, and Social Development overseeing Children and Youth Affairs, has firmly refuted claims by Don Chris accusing him of exploiting a fraud case to extort funds from President Museveni. The minister’s response comes amid a high-profile controversy that has captured public attention.

In a recent BBS TV appearance, Don Chris rejected an Internal Affairs report, alleging the disputed amount in the fraud case was 1.4 billion, consistent with earlier statements by Mr. Mudenyi. He accused Hon. Balaam of fabricating figures to siphon money from the president under the guise of victim compensation. These claims have sparked widespread debate, drawing scrutiny to the case.

Addressing the allegations on the same platform, Hon. Balaam dismissed any involvement in manipulating the case. He clarified that his role began only after numerous victims approached his office seeking assistance. As a dedicated advocate for youth, he felt compelled to inform the president about the scam targeting job seekers, emphasizing his duty to protect vulnerable citizens.

The minister also underscored his financial independence, stating he has no need for presidential handouts. I am a successful businessman, a significant taxpayer, contributing 1 billion to the URA last year alone. My wealth comes from legitimate ventures, not illicit schemes, he declared. His transparency aims to dispel rumors and affirm his integrity.

Hon. Balaam addressed Don Chris directly, urging him to face the truth. I have no personal vendetta against him, but I cannot condone scamming our people. If the president chooses to support the victims, that’s his prerogative, but we won’t allow fraud to go unchecked, he stated. He revealed that after victims flooded his office with complaints, he convened a meeting where their lawyers demanded Don Chris repay the defrauded amount within a week. Instead, Don Chris reportedly fled the country.

While acknowledging Don Chris’s efforts to help job seekers, Hon. Balaam condemned his alleged deceit. He’s young and has potential, but stealing from our people is unacceptable. We’ve handed the matter to Interpol, Uganda Police, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs to ensure justice, he said.

This unfolding saga highlights the minister’s commitment to safeguarding Ugandan youth while addressing fraud. As authorities pursue Don Chris, the case underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in public service, resonating with citizens seeking justice for victims of scams.
